New diversity coordinator excited about role
After a nationwide recruitment search, Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna selected Karen Nelson to serve as the City’s next diversity and inclusion coordinator.
Nelson started her new role with the city Monday.
Nelson brings to Appleton more than 25 years of experience in managing diversity in private sector organizations. Most recently, she was the lead consultant for NelStar Leadership and Diversity Consulting. Prior to that, Nelson served as the corporate diversity manager for Shaw Industries, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., and manager of cultural diversity for General Electric Medical Systems.
She received her executive master in business administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
“Karen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position, and we are excited and proud to have her join our organization,” said Mayor Hanna.
