Arrest for Physical Attack on Officers
While attempting to flee the police department, a man suspected of sexual assault physically attacked two officers.
On July 18, 2017, at approximately 11:20 AM, investigators were speaking to a suspect in an interview room about the alleged sexual assault of a person with mental illness at the suspect’s home. Investigators determined they had sufficient evidence to charge the suspect with the May incident involving an adult female. Upon being told he was under arrest, the suspect attempted to flee the interview room located off the lobby of the Appleton Police Department. When investigators tried to stop the suspect, he aggressively fought with the investigators; causing injuries to both officers. Multiple officers in the department responded to a call for assistance and took the suspect into custody.
Both officers required medical treatment at a local hospital as a result of the suspect’s sudden attack. Following treatment, they returned to duty.
Appleton resident, Kevin P. VerHoeven (M/W, 07/10/83) was confined at the Outagamie County Jail. Charges of 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of a Person with Mental Illness, Resisting Arrest and two (2) counts of Battery to Officers are being requested against VerHoeven.
