City of Appleton Warns Citizens to be Aware of Fly by Night Roofing Contractors (posted July 30, 2010)
The City of Appleton Police Department and Clerks Office are advising citizens to be aware of roofing contractors who have descended upon the city after the recent storm and hail damage, many of whom are conducting business without the proper solicitors’ license.
The City of Appleton requires all vendors/roofers who sell or solicit door to door, to be licensed by the city. These licenses are issued after the applicant passes a criminal and consumer complaint background check. The solicitor’s identification card/license is color coded for each selling season and has the salesperson’s picture on it. Starting April 1, 2010 through September 30, 2010, the identification card will have a blue background. Licenses are issued by the City of Appleton Clerk’s office.
Residents are advised to ask solicitors/roofers to see their City of Appleton solicitors identification card/license. If they do not have one, you are advised to not purchase anything from them.
Some other tips include:- If the sales person does not have a permit from the city, contact the Police Department.
- If the sales person is using questionable tactics, contact the Police Department.
- Do not let sales persons into your home. This makes it more difficult for you to end the sales call and could be dangerous.
