  Traffic

The Federal Highway Administration recently approved the use of a new type of traffic signal at mid-block pedestrian crosswalk locations. Referred to as a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB), this system uses traditional traffic and pedestrian signals, but with a different configuration and sequence of operation. Studies conducted throughout the nation have shown that the PHB system offers substantial safety improvements as compared to traditional systems.

Note: Pedestrians should not expect an immediate response when the pushbutton is pressed. A minimal delay is programmed to ensure the PHB does not continuously cycle, which would create heavy delays for vehicles.
