The City of Appleton Citizens Academy is a 10-week program aimed at educating citizens about the workings of their local government. The academy is open to anyone who lives or works in the City of Appleton. 

Sessions include:

  • Appleton Public Library
  • Community and Economic Development (CED)/ Department of Health/ Department of Public Works (Engineering Division)/Department of Legal and Administrative Services/ Common Council
  • Office of the Mayor/ Department of Finance/ Department of Human Resources/ Department of Information Technology
  • Department of Utilities: Water Treatment Plant
  • Valley Transit
  • Department of Public Works (Operations)
  • Department of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Management
  • Appleton Police Department
  • Appleton Fire Department
  • Wrap Up & Graduation Day

Throughout the sessions, participants gain insights into the responsibilities of City departments and the services they provide to the community. Presentations and "behind-the-scenes" facility tours enhance participants' understanding of the crucial role local government plays in maintaining the quality of life enjoyed by Appleton residents. 

The sessions and tours take place at various locations across the City, including the Police Station, Public Works Facility, Fire and Police Stations, City Hall, and more. 

Application and Curriculum 

To qualify for the academy, please ensure that you complete the application and waiver forms. You can also download the brochure for additional information. 

Form Submission Instructions:
Email Submission:

  • Email the completed application and waiver forms to mayor@appleton.org
  • Use the subject line: "CoA Citizens Academy Applicant (Your Name)"
  • Ensure that all required fields are filled out accurately.

In-Person Submission:

  • Bring your completed form to the following address: 100 N Appleton Street, Appleton, WI 54911 by no later than February 9th.
  • For additional details and information about the Citizens Academy, download the program agenda, schedule, and brochure.
  • This free 10-week program is open to the City of Appleton residents on a first-come, first-served basis. The academy will be filled based on the order in which completed applications are received. Once the current academy is full, those who did not get a seat will be given priority for the next session.
  • The last date to fill out the application and waiver is Feb 9th, 2024.

NOTE: Ensure that all required fields are accurately filled out. Please complete both the application and waiver forms. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

The deadline for form submission is February 9th, 2024.
