Water
Water Distribution became a function of the Department of Public Works - Operations in 1993. The construction division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of approximately 3,300 fire hydrants and approximately 5,000 distribution valves within the 360 miles of water main system. Monitoring water usage and quality, repair of water mains and structures, replacing lead and galvanized water services, and biannual system flushing are objectives to assure a continuous and adequate supply of water, reasonably free from objectionable taste, color, odor, or sediment. Water Distribution is under the direction of the Deputy Director of Operations, Nathan Loper and the Water Distribution Foreman, Erick Cardew.
A team of water meter employees is responsible for measuring the quantity of water. Water meters are serviced, replaced and tested on a scheduled basis to assure accuracy and to conform to the standards specified by the Public Service Commission. The team has installed a new AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) system in all accounts. This new system helps the Utility to operate more efficiently, provide improved leak detection, obtain readings online, convert from cubic feet of billing to gallons and allow our customers to access their information online.
