I want to obtain information regarding planning, zoning or subdivision issues.
In many cases, the information may be obtained by a phone call to the Community and Economic Development Department, but if there are complex issues, a visit to the office to get all the facts before making decisions about your project may be necessary.
I want to know when a special use permit is required.
The Zoning Ordinance identifies certain land uses that don't fit into existing zoning districts, but may be allowed with approval of a special use permit. They are uses that may or may not be appropriate in a particular location depending on public need and benefit versus community and neighborhood impact. Some uses that require a special use permit are: taverns, restaurant with alcohol sales, car washes, auto body repair/paint shop, gasoline sales, automobile sales, shelter facilities, etc.
I want to know what a Certificate of Appropriateness is and when it is required.
The certificate is issued by the City of Appleton Historic Preservation Commission. It approves the alteration, rehabilitation, construction, reconstruction or demolition of a historic structure, historic site or any improvement in a historic district. A certificate must be obtained before any building permits will be issued. You can download the application form from this website or call the Community and Economic Development Department to have one mailed to you. Applications must be submitted eight business days before the regular monthly meeting of the Commission.
I want to know the zoning of my property.
To find the zoning of a property, use the My Neighborhood webpage. Not only will you find the zoning, but also other important data about your property is listed here.
I want to establish a business in my own home in a residential zoning district.
The Home Occupation section of the Zoning Ordinance allows some types of business in residential areas. Due to concerns for the neighborhood, there are certain restrictions on the types of businesses allowed and the methods of operation. We advise contacting the Community and Economic Development Department and speaking to a Planner prior to making any decisions or purchases regarding a home occupation.
I want to apply for a rezoning, special use permit, site plan review, certified survey map review, plat review, annexation or temporary use permit.
