Compost Program
What is Compost?
Compost is the biological decomposition of organic matter by beneficial organisms. Four main ingredients are needed for the organisms to thrive – Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Water. The most efficient composting occurs with a 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen ratio. Too much or too little of either carbon or nitrogen could result in a slowdown of the composting process or the release of odors. Management of the feedstocks and blends are critical to efficiently producing an exceptional quality, humus rich compost that is optimum for growth and soil stabilization.
The City of Appleton’s Biosolid Compost contains three to four parts brush and leaves (Carbon) and one part biosolids (Nitrogen). It is then blended together and processed over a period of time to create and “exceptional quality” Class A product as it is known by regulatory and compost industry standards. The composting process is continuously monitored to ensure that key operational parameters (e.g. air, moisture, and mix) are adequately maintained. The City of Appleton Biosolids Compost Facility is currently the only such facility operating in the state of Wisconsin. Nationwide, there are 261 operating biosolids composting facilities.
