The field training program at the Appleton Police Department is one of the most important assignments in uniformed patrol. Field Training Officers (FTO) are responsible for providing new officers with all the knowledge required to perform the essential job functions of a police officer.

FTOs must have at least three years of post probation experience and go through a rigorous selection process. Performance evaluations, an interview, and their personal skill set are expected to be at a high level before they are considered for a 24 hour training session.

FTOs must be able to provide relevant, timely, and error free training. The job of training a new police officer is challenging, but rewarding. Lifelong friendships and mentoring are the reward for a job well done
