History of Appleton Compost

The Appleton Compost Advisory Group is comprised of the City of Appleton Department of Public Works, Department of Utilities, and Outagamie County Department of Solid Waste. It was established in 2009 by the City of Appleton and is the result of a decade long investment to research and initiatives committed to finding sustainable, environmentally sound alternatives for organic waste streams in Northeast Wisconsin.

Appleton Compost is comprised of wastewater treatment residuals (biosolids), leaves, and brush generated by City of Appleton residents. The mission of the Group was to develop an environmentally friendly but cost-effective way to transform locally generated materials historically recognized as having little or no perceived value into a product that could be utilized for a variety of local applications. The Appleton Compost facility offers growers, landscapers, and construction firms an alternative to chemically based fertilizers and costly erosion control best management practices.
